Design Engineer
Who we are
Veltrus manages, designs, and delivers electric utility projects, and builds the platform that runs them. We started as Caliber Engineering Solutions, built by people who learned the work inside the utility. We are a growing company, and the people who join now shape how we work.
The role
You design electric distribution work for utility projects, from field survey to issued construction drawings. Projects range from new services and service upgrades to EV charging, large loads, reliability work, DER interconnection, and joint use make ready. You size the equipment, lay out the design, and issue drawings that build safely and right the first time.
What you own
Design
- Survey sites in the field and confirm existing conditions
- Size transformers, services, and conductors, and check loading, voltage drop, and clearances against the utility’s standards
- Produce distribution layouts, construction drawings, and materials lists for overhead and underground work
- Run pole loading analysis and make ready design where the work calls for it
- Issue designs through the utility’s systems of record
Quality
- Apply engineering standards and codes to every design
- Peer check every design before it is issued
- Answer utility design review comments and carry each resubmittal through to approval
Coordination
- Work with the Project Manager, the utility, permitting, and construction partners to hold committed dates
- Support construction with field questions, redlines, and as builts
- Help improve how the design team works, and shape the tools you use
What you bring
- Degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field
- 3+ years of relevant electric utility distribution design experience
- Knowledge of utility engineering standards and industry codes, including the NESC
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar drafting software, and GIS
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites
Preferred
- Design experience with a large investor owned utility in the region
- Experience with EV charging, large load, or DER interconnection design
- Pole loading software and make ready design experience
- EIT, FE, PE, or other certifications
